COLORADO ROCKIES and THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER

THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER

Greetings to all of our friends and supporters of The Lutheran Chorale.

We began our fall season with the opportunity to sing the Star Spangled Banner at the Colorado Rockies baseball game on September 22.  This is becoming a regular gig, and we love being out there supporting the Rockies!

Our season is flying by quickly, after a beautiful and successful Great Hymns concert in October, and a Christmas Concert in December with old favorites and new anthems as well.  We hope you were able to attend and enjoy!

Our 2022-2023 concert season can be found by clicking here.  Our next concert will be Sunday, March 12, 2023.

WHO IS DANA MENGEL?

Who is Dana Mengel?

Dana Mengel, 62, is a freelance composer and violinist. He began his career as a professional violist at the age of 14 and is now among the top freelance classical musicians in the Kansas City metro area. Dana performs with many local orchestras and appears regularly with his brother, Leslie Mengel, a classical cellist. Together, they are the Mengel Brothers Duo.

Dana studied violin at the University of Missouri–Kansas City. He began composing in 1990 and has since published over eight hundred works. His compositions have been performed across the country.

Jonathan Hodel, our conductor, discovered Mengel's Easter compositions, and was hooked. There is not a lot of his music online, but one of the pieces we are singing for this concert is "Behold the Savior", and can be heard, with accompanying artwork that is so moving, on this YouTube link:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsNoP9Mx0SA&t=540s There is a short discussion with Mengel at the end of the video, on his inspiration to composing the peace, and the other inspirations that encourage his compositions.

Dana is currently the music director at Messiah Lutheran Church in Independence, Missouri, where he lives with his wife, Tammy, and their two children.
